London's latest genre blending genius Floating Points makes his debut Dublin appearance in the basement with Jamie Behan giving us a masterclass in how techno is spun Cork style. Barry Redsetta observes & supports with Donal Dineen.

After making his presence known with this debut 7", 22-year-old Londoner Sam Sheperd rolls another skittle-killer down the great ten-pin gully in the sky with a new 12", 'Love Me Like This' out last week through R2. Smoother for shunning the glimmering bleep fits and loping snare of his previous release, Sheperd takes a Dilla-knife to Eighties funk crew Real 2 Reel’s original and stretches the sample out into something that’s silky and poised and relaxed enough to lounge in the familiarity of late-night smoke, even if its head’s somewhere else completely, stalking the same astral planes as spaced-out forebears Flying Lotus, Theo Parrish and Sun Ra. Those three find sublimity when using the tension between sampled or revived musical pasts and an individual red-eyed vision to propel their own tunes forward into new spaces, a technique that at its most potent can make a producer seem like the only thing standing between the then and the imminent. It’s very, very early doors, but Sheperd is one who at the very least appears aware of that special chemistry. More examples of the Manchester-born 22-year-old’s beat finery can be heard in mixes for BBC pair Gilles Peterson and Mary Anne Hobbs as well as for Rinse FM’s Alex Nut, with whom Sheperd has set up Eglo, home of that first Floating Points 7”.

Over the past decade, Cork based techno Dj and Producer Jamie Behan has played an integral part in the development of the Irish underground electronic music scene and has established himself as one of the countries foremost techno djs on both a national and international level. Influenced by formative experiences sneaking into clubs at the age of 14 to hear legendary DJs such as Derrick Carter and Gayle San spin, he began experimenting with mixing two hi-fi tape decks together. The purchase of decks on which to spin his steadily growing collection of early Detroit techno and chicago house, was the obvious next step to take. From these inauspicious beginnings he developed his distinctive 3-deck fusion of techno and house influences which he showcased at his own Bastardo Electrico club-nights in the legendary Sir Henry's and as host of a popular radio show on the award-winning Irish dance music radio station, Radio Friendly. This was followed by residencies at influential Cork clubnights such as Bass and Schmutzig alongside regular headline slots across Ireland, the Uk, Europe, and as far afield as the Middle East.

2008 saw Jamie sign to Real Bookings, a worldwide Dj agency where he takes his place on a roster that includes the likes of Dj Bone, Juan Atkins, Orlando Voorn, and Aux 88, and set-up his own label, 'Bastardo Electrico Recordings', which focuses on dirty, quirky underground techno taking influences from Detroit, Chicago, and European techno. The label's music policy is a reaction against the trend of pigeonholing music into ever increasingly limited categories and shows that you can have a continuity of atmosphere and attitude across a diverse range of releases. This kind of synchronised diversity is exemplfied by the artists who have recorded for Bastardo Electrico, with past and future releases and remixes coming from the likes of Dj Bone, Jeroen Search, Marco Bernardi, Vince Watson, Paul Mac, Trench, Trish Van Eynde, Chris Finke, and Matt Chester, alongside Irish artists such as Sunil Sharpe, Fish Go Deep, Lee Holman, Glenn Keohane, Rob Glennon, Robin Renwick, Romart, and Jamie himself.

In line with the ethos of his label, Jamie's DJ sets refuse to be pigeon-holed into a particular sound yet at the same time are grounded in a kind of dark electronic funk that moves from Detroit to Chicago via Europe, incorporating techno, minimal, electro, and house, all twisted together into a mutant groove. This is an eclectic fusion of sound which he has showcased on releases and remixes for labels such as Subject Detroit, Nice and Nasty, Static, and of course Bastardo Electrico. In the past year he has remixed Mark O'Sullivan and Orlando Voorn with remixes of Rennie Foster and Mark Rogan still to come in 2009.

Amongst his forthcoming projects for 2010 are a concept collaboration between him and Detroit Dj Trench called "The Architects" which is due for release in February on his own label, a release on Subject Detroit, remixes of Trish Van Eynde and Jeroen Search, as well as a series of various artists compilations entitled 'Electronic Connections' also on Bastardo Electrico. The first of these features two producers and Djs from Belgium, the aforementioned Trish Van Eynde and Klaina, alongside tracks from Jamie and Glenn Keohane, also due for release in February, closely followed by further installments in the series, Ireland-Detroit and Ireland-Holland. Also launching in 2010 is his new radio show, The Projekt Show, which he will be co-presenting with Hans from Electric Underground in Cork, that will air in podcast form from the shows own website and on various terrestrial based radio stations across the globe.
