We’re drilling down into the bedrock of desert blues for Whirligig II, the next installment in our clubnight series for fans of stimulating music in all its guises. It doesn’t come any grittier than Mariem Hassan, the magnificent voice of the displaced people of the Western Sahara.
Emerging from life in the sprawling Algerian refugee camps, this is raw, powerful music that has shared DNA with groups like Tinariwen. Like her Malian brothers, Hassan songs of the bitter conflict that has raged for three decades between the Sahara’s indigenous people and the various governments that claim dominion of its expansive territory.
Sometimes the hard land has the best music. For all its hostility and fragile human existence, here the desert is yielding music that speaks with deep roots that penetrates the soul. Hassan fuses the haul, the traditional music of the Saharawi with earthy blues guitar to create an intense and visceral experience, her defiant voice soaring over the top spurred on by hypnotic grooves that build a gripping intensity.
Also on the bill, guitarist Niwel Tsumbu will be no stranger to Dublin audiences, and here he brings us other flavours of his native DR Congo in a new quartet that also features the renaissance man of the accordion Francesco Turrisi. To send you on your way, a pan African set from DJ Nigel Wood in the main room plus a seisiun from some of Dublin’s best emerging trad players if its an acoustic roots finale you’re after.
