Ryanair Panorama

Just watched the Panorama program on Ryanair on BBC. Thought it was pretty crap and didn't tell us anything we didn't know already. The research could have been done in an hour in an internet cafe. Ryanair have put the correspondence with Panorama on their website which is an interesting read and, rightly imo, labours the fact that the BBC wouldn't agree to an unedited interview with Michael O'Leary. Typically brazen answers to their questions a la:

Panorama: "Is there an “ideal” Ryanair customer? "
Ryanair: "Yes. Any human being with a brain, a pulse and a credit card, who doesn’t want to be ripped off with BA or Easyjet’s high fares and frequently delayed flights."

It was complete garbage as usual. Panorama these days would be better suited on Sky 3.
Everyone knows the deal with Ryanair at this stage, at the least the Ryanair episode of the money programme had some new content, unlike this which had some really cheap looking inserts from that show to make up for the absence of any substance.

The doorstep interview with O'Leary on the BBC site is comical stuff. The look of exasperation on the interviewers face is priceless. Haven't seen the programme, but from reading the correspondence it looks as if Panorama were clutching at straws

Once again, the mighty Hound of Stansted triumphs. Nothing stuck, reputation in tact, and a free publicity blitz with an accompanying sale of 100,000 seats advertised in the Guardian today, one for every false claim made by Panorama. His quote on the Ryanair website is also priceless - *"Infamy, infamy, Panorama has it infamy". * O'Leary the model marketing man, one in the eye for Brit toffs in the beeb too, it has to be said.

one in the eye for Brit toffs in the beeb too, it has to be said.

Yeah, I've always thought of LocalGarda as a right British toff...

That was meant as a bit of a joke (and not directed at all BBC employees, of course, including Ronan), but in my view there is an anti-Irish current running through these English documentary "exposes" of Ryanair. So far, the only "dirt" to be dished is that they run an efficient, cost-effective airline where people largely get what they paid for. Go figure, the flight probably only cost you £20, yet people whinge that there is no recliner in their seat - if you want extras fly with Aer Lingus, they've plenty.

as a company ryanair are scum. As a business man from Ireland, different discussion.
they are beyond heart breaking to fly with, I have avoided where possible at all costs.

Re: Brits comment - I know it wasn't meant seriously but I get fed up hearing the anti-Brit sentiment trotted out here in Ireland at any given opportunity.

In relation to Ryanair, I don't see any anti-Irish bias in the reporting. I would compare it pretty much to the recent reporting on Tesco. Any company that gets "too big" a market share gets looked at pretty closely by the media.

I don't think Ryanair are doing anything illegal, but they are engaging in very un-customer-friendly practices. The online check-in thing is a complete scam that will catch out only the most vulnerable and those least able to afford paying €40 at the airport per boarding card.

They are a fantastic business success story, but I hate the brand and it's practices. And while I'm ranting - for a company with such a focus on a website, why not let people pick their seats online so they could avoid the scrum getting on the plane? They'll say it's because people would take longer to get on the plane leading to longer turn around times. Other airlines seem to manage ok...

That video is great
