Amazon for iPhone - shop keepers be terified

Was in a book store yesterday and saw book I wanted. Whipped out the iPhone and took a pic of the book using the Amazon app and within 20 seconds Amazon had 20 options for the same book, all a tenner cheaper including P&P. 2 min later I'd paid for the book on Amazon and was a tenner better off.

That must be absolutely terrifying for anybody in retail with a long term view. The technology isnt near saturation yet so its a little bit off but you know its only around the corner and will in all likelihood do to shops what MP3's did to record stores.

Of course, in the same way you can argue endlessley about vinyl/album art etc v's MP3's there will never be a replacement for being able to walk into a shop and touch/see/use/smell a product and then walking out with it straight away but this is undoubtedly a game changer.

Anybody else used it?

This is what Im talking about by the way:

Check it here

wow excellent hadn't heard of this app

I was in Waterstones yesterday looking for a book, the sales assistant was adamant it wasn't in their system/didn't exist. So I walked away for a couple of seconds, logged onto waterstones, found the book on their website and went back over. Turned out they hadn't got it anyway but I'd no shame in shoving it in her face. lol

I'd say I bought more than half of all my christmas shopping on Amazon, or shopireland or whatever its called, this year. SO much cheaper than any of the bookshops / music stores etc you find in town, most times almost half the price, and you can't go wrong with free delivery either.

We really are gonna end up like the humans in Wall-E.

I got a series of 4 books online for the price of one of the same books in the series here in a well known art supply store, over eighty quid in the difference, amazon all the way

amazon are doing for books, what Ikea did for furniture . wicked service , been using them for years . funny considering the rocky start they had , but they are miles ahead of everyone else now

but how can you take photos of the books if theres no bookstores anymore??? smile

I went to order a book for my girlfriend in LA on Amazon, and was quoted £22 for postage and packing, £37 overall, with no possibility for Christmas delivery. It seemed like they were going to ship the order from the UK, because thats where i was ordering from?

Went on to Barnes & Noble (the US Waterstones), and got the same book with 3 day delivery (arrived yesterday) for $24.

How the fuck does that Amazon system make sense, or am I missing something? Surely they should have zone-based distribution centres?

you were probably redirected to amazon.co.uk but you do have the option to stay on amazon.com
