Dj Rules Spinoff 2010

Myself and a few of the lads in DIT Dj Soc are running the
Spinoff 2010 All-Ireland Intervarsity DJ Competition.
Hopefully in conjunction with Mr.Jones in twisted pepper.

Would like opinion on one thing in particular. We are currently, for the first time, thinking of allowing the use of Timecoding with Serato or Tracktor in the competition. This would be just strictly using timecode on the provided vinyl or CDj decks. No other gear bar laptop and relevant soundcard.

Do you think we should allow timecoding or not?
Is it fair; particularly in contrast with conventional rules of allowing just cds and vinly?

i think djing has gone past the idea that if your using a computer it's 'cheating'. more about the output no? let them play what they want and whoever plays the best tunes, makes people dance the most and mixes the best wins i think

Do they let you use automatic in a driving test?

They do actually but it means you're not qualified to drive a manual wink

How long a set does each DJ get in this competition?

Have about 20minutes for the heats and possibly 30 for the final.

Dont know about the automatic car comparison! Both Cdj and time-coding provide you with the BPM, but you still have to be able to beat match by ear to get either right.

Yes the waveform and visual aspect of the laptop screen helps in finding your bearings with first beat; song breaks and drops are easier identified etc.

We could reduce the maximum possible score a Dj using timecode can achieve in the beat matching category to even the playing field/ take account the visual aid a laptop provides.

Edit; Worded this wrong here accidentally
But any person knows its all down to beatmatching by ear even when using timecoding. If you cant match the beats by ear on CDj you wont be able to on timecoding software. This is just strictly timecoding, no syncing, external hardware auto sync or any of that.

We just believe the whole taboo of laptop djing needs to be gotten over, onwards and upwards. Just feel it's time we incorporated laptops strictly through the use of timecoding, but we do not want to take anything from the integrity of the competition.

Thought you meant having the tempos for each track matched for you like Tractor and other programs do

Let em use whatever they want, The only people that give a fuck about what your using to DJ are other DJs, it needs to be gotten over.

Personally i dont care how people play as long as it sounds good

Repeat after me: 'the bits in between tracks are not as important as the tracks themselves.'

20mins for a set!

So that means after setting up traktor or serato they'll have 5mins for tunes so lol
