New laptop??

Yo,
I'm looking at getting a new laptop solely for production and am looking for a few pointers: where would be a good place to get one cheap with a fair bit of ram on it (>=3gb)? Are refurbed ones worth considering? I'm on a budget of around 3-400 euro. Could I even get a desktop for that?

Hey there, get yourself an Acer or Asus - 3-4gig ram and over 500gig hard drive, this is acer desk top, from elara.ie, for €320.00

Hey Conor,

The little I know about lap tops and all I would recommend going to the mac store online and checking out the refurb store. This is where I have got my last two.

You need to monitor it regularly as stuff goes up on it all the time. If you buy a mac book on and do it through the company to avail of it vat free you could pick one up for as little as €660.

With experience using PC's and Mac's over the years I have found Mac's to be more reliable and over the long run they are defo worth springing that little extra for.

Yep, I'm a recent 'Mac' convert and I'd never go back to using a PC, they are so reliable and intuitive, you do really get what you pay for. A colleague has had his macbook laptop since 1993 and it's still running, plus I'd imagine for production they are probably the best machine. I'd imagine you'd even pick up a second-hand one for around your budget, or even an older model mac (ie, not the macbook pro) for a couple of hundred euro more. Well worth it imo.

actually, if you use PC only for music production in your bed room, you won't need laptop - desk top one are much cheaper and better spec. Go fro iMac 21.5'??

It's not a complete necessity to have a laptop, more important to have correct spec, but it would be more convenient obv

A bigger screen will be handier too, might be worth saving for a while longer till you have money for maybe an imac or something like it, think they come as 4gig ram standard and you'll be able to add more if you want later.

If you go the Mac route avoid adding memory in the Apple Store, it's massively overpriced, you can pick up much cheaper RAM from the likes of Crucial.com

all latest iMac are come with 4GB and at least CD2 which is more than enough, almost over spec. If you are not going to run tons n millions of software synths and effect, you never have problem with its default spec.
