Damian Comoli sacked by Liverpool

Is it now fair to say that he had majority say in transfers last summer:

Dalglish has said that all the players are his signings, but he's hardly going to come out before the FA cup game and say otherwise. It's fairly obvious that Comolli had a big hand in transfers; there's no way the owners would have given Dalglish 55 million to spend in January 2011 when he'd only been appointed caretaken manager a fortnight earlier.

It's bad timing from FSG to do this a couple of days before a big game but they haven't been the revelation that some people were expecting since the took over from Hicks and Gillett. The club is still being run in an amatuer fashion. Ian Ayre was the marketing director who they promoted to CEO yet he's still looking after the marketing side of things. Comolli was brought in to look after transfers yet his role was never made clear. The Yanks had promised a new ground yet they have just applied for planning permission to stick up a few big screens around Anfield so the stadium doesn't look like it's happening any time soon. The club don't employ their own solicitors or PR team which showed during the Suarez affair. In fact the picture below shows the whole shambolic was the club is still being run: Henry, Ayre, Werner and Comolli all come out of the woodwork to have some free ale and get themselves pictured with the trophy. They were nowhere to be seen for the four months previous and showed no leadership while Dalglish took all the flak for the Suarez incident. The club has no chance of challenging United on the pitch until the owners get their shit together off it.

It's no use them showing up every three months for a big game when they spend the rest of the time managing hedge funds in Boston.

Commolli has always been a joke. He started at Arsenal under Wenger and there seemed to be some belief that he was the secret weapon behind Arséne's transfer success, so Tottenham poached him. Turns out the only player he was responsible for bringing to Arsenal was Gael Clichy. Tottenham were about to get rid of him when he managed to attract Liverpool. This is probably the end of his reputation, such as it is, if he is responsible for the signings everybody is bashing Dalglish over. If he was reponsible for all, or even most of Liverpools signings then any talk of sacking Dalglish is mental. Should be given a transfer kitty and another year at least to put his own team together.

Mind you he did sell Torres for 50 million.

and he brought downing, henderson, and carrol for how much?

Maybe I underestimated John Henry yesterday.

So far he's got rid of Comolli, the head of the medical team, the club solicitor, the goalkeeping coach and now he's demoting Ian Ayre from the managing director role. I've always said Liverpool has been run like a cornershop in comparison to United and Arsenal and hopefully this is going to address it.

Having said that, I'd be surprised if Dalglish is still in charge in August. He deserves another season to get things right but it looks as if the path is being cleared for someone else.

aye, dalglish's head looks seriously wrecked this season. his pity responses used ot have some element of humour & generosity in them but he looks demented of late. if he gets an fa cup final or win out of it, i think he can upstairs and get back to the golf and everyone's happy.

pob, you are right with how you say united v liverpool is run but united was a shitheap for years & you don't turn such a long non-winning streak around in the space of a year - either on the pitch or commercially. if henry et al are on the right track than that's a good thing. much as i enjoy liverpool floundering, i would prefer to see them up the top challenging rather than chelsea, city.

I agree with you that the club takes time to put right and that's why I was questioning Henry yesterday. Back as far as 1992 when David Moores took over as chairman, Liverpool has effectively stood still while football has moved on around them. Moores and Parry were a shambles and they were replaced by Hicks and Gillett who managed to fuck things up beyond belief, yet we still managed to punch well above our weight for a few years and that has now created this expectation amongst a lot of Liverpool fans that we have a divine right to challenge for the title every year. This is part of the problem.

Up until now I've been of the opinion that Henry was just going to invest a small bit in the club in the hope that he can move it on in a year or two for a tidy profit. I think he's realised that Liverpool are streets behind the other big clubs and has now moved to address that. Rumour has it that they're looking a bringing David Dein in to run the day to day operations. Although he was a bit of a dodgy dealer at Arsenal, he brought in Wenger and modernised the club and Liverpool badly need someone like that.

The next few months are going to be really important for the club. (I've been saying that way too often over the last few years)

David Dein (or as he's known among Gooners, the Orange one) would be a real coup for Liverpool. Whatever about the way he left Arsenal the guy is one of the top political movers and shakers in football. He has everybodys ear and can really oil the wheels for your club. You'll see that transfers suddenly become quicker and cheaper as he does all sorts of wheeling and dealing in the background. You might find liverpool playing a pre-season in the back garden of some millionairs gaff but you'll have gotten a quality player dirt cheap for it.
