On Street Charity Collectors

I posted before about this a couple of years ago and it sparked quite a big debate. Surely this system of signing people up for a monthly / annual payment is no longer effective? The various charities must have been through nearly every resident of Dublin at this stage! And the approach of so many of them is beyond irritating.

I overheard a girl today on her mobile on the luas who had been working as one, she signed up 1 person today day but got paid e60, and I think she mentioned something about a weekly donation toward transport costs.

I'd love to know the behind the scenes of revenue vs expense and where exactly it really is all going

Urgh, I dread walking up streets covered in chuggers, as if you are going to say yes to one 30ft away from the last one you just said no to. And some of them are that little bit too invasive in their approach. I've heard a few times that they get paid pretty well.

they're what headphones and sunglasses are made for

There were two lads trying to sign people up for monthly donations to the Dogs Trust, inside the Tesco in Rathmines on Sunday morning. It was impossible to get into the shop without talking to them and one of them kept walking alongside me even after I'd picked up a basket, insisting that I shake his hand. Normally I'm fairly polite with them but this lad got told to fuck off in no uncertain terms.

I generally dont mind these people but I do dislike and disagree with some of their methods. The shaking your hand thing and pestering should be band. A simple scourge is fine.

I hate them with every bone in my body. I have no idea how anybody could sign up to a job where you spent 8 hours a day being told to fuck off by people.

they annoy the hell out of me as well, but apparently the charities use them because they are hugely successful - for every 2/3 people they piss off they get 5 new subscribers.

one of them actually got narky with me one day when i was waiting for my girlfriend at the luas stop. he was pestering me for at least 5 mins before i snapped and told him to go away, he told me i should learn to fucking smile and stormed off . but some of them are really good at signing people up and they must work out in the bigger scale of things because theyre still being used. i fucking hate them though id much rather give my money to the guys out with a bucket of coins who are doing it for free.

From charities' point of view though a bucket with coins is next to useless compared to signing someone up for a minimum of 15 quid a month.
