Euro 2012 Thread

A group of scandanavian statistician's reckon that on the basis on the law of probablility and the manager in charge of each country in each group, that Mr. Trappa would not have to win any group match, grind out the draws and hope sneak second.

bearing in mind that not once in the 4 previous tournaments has 3 points got any team out of the group, i'm happy to call bullshit here. unsurprisingly.

Ah here now Simon, you're being a little obtuse, you're just failing to see how likely the odds are. Magoo's premise is really very simple, all it requires is:

1st presume Ireland draw every game in their group, including against on-form World and European Champions Spain, and 2nd requires Spain to beat Italy in their opening game and then, after a shaky draw with Ireland, hold their nerve and beat Croatia so they top the group with 7 points. So far, so simple.

Now, it's quite deceptive, but when you boil it down you're simply left with:

3rd, just one result go in Ireland's favour: Italy v Croatia draw leaving them on 2 points each, and hey presto! Ireland qualify with 3 points! Inevitable outcome! And Italy and Croatia will both absolutely most definately be playing for a draw in that instance, what with them having lost and drawn their first games respectively.

So that's it really, one game in it when you presume the Ireland and Spain results are a given! Now, not one to miss a golden opportunity when I see one, I put €100 on an accumulator with all these outcomes and found myself good to the tune of €45,500, so I've gone and put a down payment on a DBS and booked a celebratory meal in Guilbauds.

So in the end, you have to ask yourself - can you afford to miss out?

If only Magoo could be as insightful as you, Gthink, the world would be a better palce. Or at least this forum anyway. Let the games commence.

Don't think our Fyffes banana's will go down too well!

They seem to be backtracking a bit on that now. Tbf they were probably just booing Van Bommel for being a dirty cunt

A spokesman for the Dutch team tells BBC Sport there will be no official complaint to Uefa over racial abuse of players at Wisla Krakow stadium.

Some players, including captain Mark van Bommel, heard racial abuse but, according to the Dutch, this was mixed with Polish fans making political statements and chanting "f*** Euro 2012". Head coach Bert van Marwijk did not hear any racist abuse, the Dutch FA said.

From the same article Paddy linked above:

Journalist Marcel Van Der Kraan, who writes for Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, said he heard the racist abuse.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: "The Dutch had an open training session which they always do at one of the big stadiums to make the public feel welcome.

"As the Dutch players did their warm-up, during the first lap of the pitch they could hear monkey noises from one end of the crowd.

"When the players heard this they said they would do another lap and if they heard monkey noises again they would stop.

"The Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk moved all the cones and started training on the pitch as far away from these people as possible.

"It was considerably more than two or three people. The Dutch media could hear it as well."

Van Der Kraan added the whole Dutch team were behind van Bommel's stance.

He added: "[Winger] Ibrahim Afellay said if the whole team decides to do something, they will all do it together. He said, 'If someone turns right, we all turn right'."

The day before the alleged abuse, the Netherlands players had visited Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz, which is nearby.
