Banned By the BBC
Nearly as long as the BBC has been playing music, it's been banning it too. 'Death, drugs, sex and swearing', are among the things that can get you banned by the broadcaster's mysterious censoring body, (the Dance Music Policy Committee), and this month, a collection of these banned tracks are being released on CD by British DJ Spenser Leigh.

The DMPC was set up in the 30s to 'protect' the masses from unsuitable material. Songs like Sex Pistols' 'God Save The Queen' and D-Mob's 'We Call It Acieed' were pulled from playlists for falling outside the boundaries of the BBC's ideas of decency. Other tracks however, were given the red card for less obvious reasons.
Massive Attack were only allowed to be referred to as 'Massive' during the first Gulf War and Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 'Relax' was famously banned, not because of the song itself, but because the video featured simulated anal sex and urinating into people's mouths.
And it's not just a modern music thing either; back in 1932 Norman Long was poking fun at the BBC's conservatism with the single 'We Can't Let You Broadcast That.' Unsurprisingly, the single was banned!!!
This Record Must Not Be Broadcast: Banned By The BBC is out on Acrobat Records on August 25.
