Australian police have reported that the largest ecstasy bust the world has ever seen, took place last week over four of Australia’s states. The drug syndicate involved are thought to be responsible for more than 60% of the drug imports to Australia.
Four tonnes of MDMA and 150 kilos of cocaine were amongst the drugs confiscated which apparently came to a street value of nearly half a billion Australian dollars.
The tablets were discovered packed into more than 3,000 food tins and apparently the bust took over a year to pull off. A reported 400 police officers were involved leading to 45 search warrants and 16 arrests.
Usually on high profile drug seizures the estimated street value is always widely exaggerated, however it seems whatever way you look at it, this seizure was worth a lot of money.
The Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty said the operation was executed with the help of the European authorities and deemed highly successful. “If you think it through, there aren’t too many boardrooms in Australia where you write off half-a-billion dollars worth of a commodity, of product and continue your business,” said Keelty.
