A Brief Introduction to...Vince Watson

**He is…**Glasgow based techno producer/DJ and owner of label and production company Bio Music. Started out playing hip hop and house music at his school disco every weekend before discovering the deeper side of electronic music. Described by Laurent Garnier as “a man who really knows the true sense of techno music…music made with the heart. And you can never go wrong with that”. **His music is…**deep, dubby, spaced out, ethereal techno, he also dabbles in house, electronica and broken beat. **What’s been going on for Vince Watson this year?** Its been a quieter year for me in the studio than any year before, as I took a 9 month break (no, I wasn't pregnant) :), just needed to refresh after some big life changes, and also absorb a lot of the scene again...when you're playing constantly and traveling a lot you do miss some seriously good music. I've been writing music for film and tv lately also which has been really exciting and new for me. **If you were writing your own review what would you say about yourself?!** For a start I wouldn't put the name ‘Detroit’ anywhere, it gets a bit boring after a while to be branded a Detroit artist when you're from Glasgow. I just make electronic music, thats it. To be honest, the egotism in me is quite controlled, I'm not a huge attention seeker, so I would probably say I was pretty well respected for the music I have released over the last 10 years, and that I seem to have developed a signature sound, regardless of the style I make. My music is certainly a little bit leftfield of the norm, but I do have the roots of the music at heart and make and play my music from the soul. Sound reasonable? :) **Tell us a bit about your best gig to date and why was it the best?** There are a few really great ones. Most are good but a few make my heart pump when I think back to them. My second appearance in Club Womb, Tokyo was just insane. I was recording a Live CD for Japanese release and the place was electric from start to finish. I had just released my ‘Echoes from the Future’ and it was a good release in Japan also. Another is Clash in Sao Paulo. The first time I played there they had only opened for 3 weeks. Now the club has legendary status as the best techno club in Brazil. One more must go to Subclub in Glasgow, my home town. Anyone who plays there knows it's one of the most underground places around, but the crowd are just awesome. Amazing sound system in a tight venue breeds a fantastic experience. **What piece of new fangled technology has really made a difference to your job in the last few years?** Well, I'm certainly not about to give away any of my studio secrets :), I've bought a few new synths and some other hardware that's really made a difference to my productions. I did incorporate Ableton Live 7 in the studio, but I still use a hardware sequencer, an Akai MPC2000xl, and I am about to purchase the new MPC5000. I still don't use any software for sounds, although I embrace the power of plug-ins now, I just haven't found the need to start using it. Part of the problem with technology and the scene at the moment is that it's its own achilles heel. It's so very easy to buy a cheap laptop and download a few torrents of plugins to use with it now that the saturation point of having good music and bad music has been broken. There are a billion younger kids out there starting to make music, but only a handfull will actually move on and develop into being proper musicians. While it's great for poeple to get access to making music as cheaply as possible, the demise of vinyl has meant that digital labels are popping up everyday and the quality is being driven down rapidly. There has to be a renaissance though, quality always comes through in the end....how long is that tunnel, this is the tricky part... **What three producers/musicians would you most like to get in to the studio with you and why?** Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. These guys were well ahead of the curve and Blakey’s drumming is something that Planet Earth should be proud of. Mad Mike Banks. Mike’s passion and chord creations are of a league afforded to him only, including the mistakes. I guess I would also like to work with The Cinematic Orchestra. The blend of classical jazz and broken beat material blows me away....real top quality programming. **What can we look forward to from Vince Watson at the Electric Picnic?!** Electronic soul....passion for melody which is sorely needed in today's numbed down so called ‘minimal’ voids of emptiness....complexed arrangements of architectural soundscapes....like a full on trip to the innermost part of your brain and back again. Oh, and some damn righteously funky music. Call it what you like....but it will be passion delivered from my soul to the floor. I put my heart into every set....and I hope that I will open people's eyes a little who haven't seen me before, and suprise those who know my music but have not heard the new material, which I will be playing a lot of. **What, if anything have you heard about the good old Irish crowd?!** I played in Cork last year, so I know all about it. You don't hear ‘about’ the Irish, you just hear them....being a Celt myself I understand :) We like to give our appreciation for good music, it's always been that way. **Not many people know that I…**study Quantum Physics and M-Theory, and I work as a stuntman for Cirque de Soleil. **Vince’s thought for the day is…**Why do people lean forward when driving in the fog as if the fog is in the car? **Vince’s words of the day are…**Muitos Felicidade! **Vince’s idea of a good night out is…**really good friends round for a few really good Caiparinhas, followed by a really good home made meal, followed by a really good gig, followed by a really good after party, followed by a really good sleep

Its been a quieter year for me in the studio than any year before, as I took a 9 month break (no, I wasn't pregnant) :), just needed to refresh after some big life changes, and also absorb a lot of the scene again...when you're playing constantly and traveling a lot you do miss some seriously good music. If you were writing your own review what would you say about yourself?!

For a start I wouldn't put the name ‘Detroit’ anywhere, it gets a bit boring after a while to be branded a Detroit artist when you're from Glasgow. I just make electronic music, thats it. To be honest, the egotism in me is quite controlled, I'm not a huge attention seeker, so I would probably say I was pretty well respected for the music I have released over the last 10 years, and that I seem to have developed a signature sound, regardless of the style I make. There are a few really great ones. Most are good but a few make my heart pump when I think back to them. My second appearance in Club Womb, Tokyo was just insane. Not many people know that I…study Quantum Physics and M-Theory, and I work as a stuntman for Cirque de Soleil.

Vince’s thought for the day is…Why do people lean forward when driving in the fog as if the fog is in the car?

Vince’s words of the day are…Muitos Felicidade!

Vince’s idea of a good night out is…really good friends round for a few really good Caiparinhas, followed by a really good home made meal, followed by a really good gig, followed by a really good after party, followed by a really good sleep.
