The Mobile World Congress is being held in Barcelona right now, and the worlds mobile phone manufacturers are using it as a base to unveil a whole host of exciting new mobile gadgets to the world. This year the theme is likely to be "iPhone Killers" as the big names like Sony Ericsson and Nokia make a grab for the sexy smartphone market.
Certainly Sony Ericsson will have captured plenty of attention with their new Xperia brand of mobile phone, launching with the X1 (pictured) later this year. Its got a whole host of goodness, full QWERTY slide-out keyboard, GPS, superfast 3G (with superfast uploading, for that useless video calling business), 3 inch touchscreen with a 800 x 480 resolution and a 3.2 megapixel camera, all built on top of the Windows Mobile 6 platform, which means proper web on the move browsing and stuff like Microsoft Office Mobile etc. To make it all a bit more "finger friendly", Sony Ericsson have fully customised the interface, coming up with something they call "Xperia Panels". Another wildly different product shown off in Spain was the LifeVibes MixDJ software from NXP, which apparently "helps create a party atmosphere anytime and anywhere". It lets users create playlists that the software then plays from, and automatically pitch-matches and syncs each tune, in a Traktor stylee, to be a true 21st century Mobile DJ. Nathan Barley look out!
"This unique software addresses changing consumer habits as people increasingly use mobile devices as their main audio player, whether via built-in stereo speakers or linked to a separate speaker accessory. Instead of simply playing songs consecutively with pauses between them, MixDJ eliminates these gaps which people often find annoying. The resulting continuous, seamless playback is perfect for creating a party atmosphere. With MixDJ, a phone or MP3 can provide a non-stop beat that keeps people moving."
How long till we see a Richie Hawtin DJ set from a phone? Maybe not long, as the software is set to launch on the Samsung F250, due out sometime in this half of 2008.
Finally, according to PocketLint the recent LG Viewty is to be updated to allow it to record with a rather incredible 640 x 480 resolution at 120FPS directly to DivX format, which could potentially make it a great tool for VJs looking for some super slow motion footage.
The Viewty already possessed such technology, but only at rather poor resolutions, making it rather useless, but maybe not now with this boost. Now all they need to do is change the laws of physics so that recording at 120 frames per second doesn't require you to be standing 4 metres away from the sun....
