Coachella line-up revealed
The first major event on the now increasingly hectic and competitive music festival calendar, Coachella provides a flavour of the season to come for the rest of the year. As all international festivals start to look increasingly similar, there's a large debate as to what really makes alot of music festivals stand out from each other ? Do they all look the same and is it a case of too much of a good thing... As rumoured on this site, Portishead do indeed top the bill on the Saturday . Overall the line-up is not bad , some highlights are Canadian rockers Holy Fuck and German ravers Modeselektor. Danny Tenaglia is an interesting choice - although anyone seen within a 50 metre radius of him with an MP3 recorder might want to think again. Man of the people Dan Deacon will definitely worth catching and The Horrors could go either way. Hot Chip also make a rare festival appearance. Here's the line-up for the festival... FRIDAY, APRIL 25: Jack Johnson, The Verve, Raconteurs, The Breeders, Fatboy Slim, Tegan and Sara, Madness, The Swell Season, The National, Animal Collective, Slightly Stoopid, Mum, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Stars, Battles, Aesop Rock, Midnight Juggernauts, Does it Offend you, Yeah?, Minus the Bear, Spank Rock, dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip, Diplo, Adam Freeland, Santo Gold, Jens Lekman, John Butler Trio, Vampire Weekend, Dan Deacon, Architecture in Helsinki, Sandra Collins, Busy P, Cut Copy, Black Lips, Datarock, Professor Murder, Reverend and the Makers, The Bees, Porter, Rogue Wave, Modeselektor, American Bang, Lucky I Am. SATURDAY, APRIL 26: Portishead, Kraftwerk, Death Cab for Cutie, Cafe Tacuba, Sasha & Digweed, Rilo Kiley, Dwight Yoakam, M.I.A., Hot Chip, Cold War Kids, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, DeVotchKa, Flogging Molly, Mark Ronson, Turbonegro, Scars on Broadway, Islands, Enter Shikari, Calvin Harris, Boyz Noize, Junkie XL, Cinematic Orchestra, Jamie T, The Teenagers, VHS or Beta, Carbon/silicon, Erol Alkan, Yo Majesty!, Little Brother, Bonde Do Role, St. Vincent, Akron Family, MGMT, Institubes DJs (Surkin, Para One and Orgasmic), James Zabiela, Sebastian, Kavinsky, Dredg, The Bird and the Bee, Grand Ole Party, New Young Pony Club, 120 Days, Yoav, Electric Touch, Uffie SUNDAY, APRIL 27: Roger Waters (“Dark Side of the Moon”), Love & Rockets, My Morning Jacket, Spiritualized, Justice, Gogol Bordello, Chromeo, The Streets, Metric, Danny Tenaglia, Simian Mobile Disco, Booka Shade, Murs, Dmitri from Paris, Autolux, The Field, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Les Savy Fav, The Cool Kids, Sons & Daughters, Sia, Holy Fuck, Black Kids, Black Mountain, The Annuals, Kid Sister w/A-Trak, Man Man, Duffy, I'm from Barcelona, Manchester Orchestra, Deadmau5, The Horrors, Austin TV, Shout Out Louds, Plastiscines, Brett Dennen Coachella 2008 takes place on April 25.26.27 in California , USA . I've heard that the festival is a bit sterile and the crowd far too restrained, whatever that means. Would be a fecking lovely place to go for some music though.
i think the crowd is just more chilled out because of the setting (its really beautiful) and the heat (too hot to really go mad). but we found a few absolute buzzers!
Bands wise it aint bad at all at all. On the dance side of things the line up is utter poo imo. Apart from the lads from Dusseldorf. Obviously. But then yanks and dance music eh? You could never guess they started it all could ya???
its usually more a band festival though innit ? i think they've done with dance music this year like what sonar did last year with bands. booked a load of ' whats cool in this scene coz we haven't a clue about it ' acts.
thats why for me alot of festivals are starting to look the same. everyone is now covering all the bases. thats cool and all , just means each of them are losing what makes them unique.
yup. too many similar acts at too many festivals. While i'd love to actually get around to visiting the picnic, i still love the smaller festivals that focus less on what "in" and more just whats good within the genres. like for techno, bloc - which fair enough has the odd fella like ddddddave clarke and beltram playin - just goes for sheer quality. the line-ups they have are immense. im ridiculously excited about going this year.
nothin wrong with ddddddave clarke
yeah it does look like they have booked all the 'now' acts which is a shame because if you look at their old line ups they have always been really innovative and fresh for america, like '99 had mu-ziq, autechre scruff, luke vibert, cornelius, dj food etc. which is amazing for an american festival in california. 2001 had aphex twin, the orb, kruder and dorfmeister, ian pooley, st germain etc. i could go on, you get the picture anyway, its always had great dance line ups. if you look at there forum, the people on it are as pissed off/surprised about how poor it is as everyone else is. i dunno what the promoters were thinking, maybe they wanted it to sell out or maybe they just dont care as much anymore? its now one of the most famous festivals in the world thanks to some guy bootlegging daft punk in 06, and it sold out for the first time in 07, and to think in 2000 it was cancelled due to lack of interest/lack of funding. so i dunno, EP could probably learn a lesson from it about selling out (metaphorically) or something
"nothin wrong with ddddddave clarke"
my point more was, he's a fairly predictable booking for a dance festival.

the line up is alright, not their best, but when it started it had practically no rivals and they were able to just get the best line ups imaginable. now there is a lot of (european style) festivals in america. their line ups in the past have consistantly been the best in the world though. the whole electro thing is getting big with the typical coachella festival goer and they pretty much have every single big name act in the genre playing. like all of them! still probably the best festival in the world, but not by as many country miles as it use to
