Gorillaz up to Monkey Business
Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have teamed up with London based adverting agency RKCR/Y&R to create the BBC’s Beijing Olympics coverage campaign. The two-minute short sees Monkey, Piggsy and Sandy – all characters from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West – battle demons as they make their way to the Beijing Olympics. Accompanied by an original soundtrack, the short will feature on TV, web and mobile and is the second time Albarn and Hewlett have brought the Monkey King to life. Earlier this year they collaborated with Chen Shizheng on Monkey – Journey to The West, a Chinese opera-inspired stage show which finished up in London’s Royal Opera House last week. An original piece of work in Hewlett’s inimitable style, it sees the normally fairly staid and stuffy Beeb take a lesson or two from some of their more creative competitors with positive results. Well I'd say the "budget" on this brief might have had something to do with it!

would have thought Albarn wouldn't have got himself involved in anything to do with the Olympics given the issues surrounding human rights and Tibet etc.
