Another day, another awards show
DJ Mag finally gets a rival
Dance music MP3 superstore Beatport have just announced their very own awards show. "So what" says you, and maybe you are right but it will be an interesting slant on the traditional dance music awards show.
This will obviously be an all encompassing affair. Beatport is recognized globally as one of the best and most respected MP3 stores around. It covers all genres give or take, from the dirtiest dubstep to the glossiest funky house so all musical styles shall be well represented and the nominees are about as democratically elected as can be. The nominees will be based soley on unit sales per genre, meaning the best sellers will be put forward automatically for final voting. The nominees have been settled upon leaving no chance for sales fiddling by DJ's with big mailing lists. This means you wont be seeing an unfair DJ Mag Top 100 style list with obscure Dutch Trance DJs sitting proudly at the top of the pile.
Given Beatport's near ubiquity when it comes to dance music sales online, they have the clout to make this awards show a regular and well respected fixture on the dance music calender.
Heres the final nominees for your perusal:

Nominees based on sales...sure why not, isn't that how music charts are decided?
At least you can't argue with the evidence and get all caught up in a debate about the merits of John O'Callaghan's input to the Trance scene over Tiesto's for the last year
Hmmm, dunno if I like the idea of it just being based on winners in certain genres- a lot of artists say Deadmau5 have a bit of crossover, would be better if they incorporated other awards such as Best Compliation, album etc...
It's definitely a better way to do things than the who's-got-the-biggest-mailing-list approach. At least this way some solid factor is being used to determine the nominees, with the more human element being used to determine the winner by vote from a list of worthy candidates.
It also opens up proceedings for people who experiment with other genres but who may not generally be associated with those genres... of course I'm referring to....
CHYMERA! Go on the chill out!
Nominated for the beatless mix of Umbrella (or as it's also known, Um-ber-ella, eile, eile, eile...)
Well done Bren!
Phil.
Think its a better procedure alright.. I'm not a trance fan but I assume somebody else in the Trance category will take the prize over Tiesto.
Reckon this will automatically justify the irrelevance of the DJ top 100 poll which is a good thing I think.. Good step for Dance Music Awards and the scene in my opinion.
yes Chymera chill-out legend! well done.
And then Trentemoller to win every other category, and deservedly so.

Nominees based on sales...reminds me of that World music awards that they have in Monte Carlo. You sold the most, therefore you are the best! whatever.
