Universal Give Away Music....For Free
Free file sharing network Qtrax has announced a partnership with major label Universal Music who will supply the site with free music.
Qtrax launched with much publicity in January of this year with claims that all four major music labels were involved in deals to supply the site with free legal music downloads. This claim was then swiftly denied by all the labels.
The announcement of the partnership between Universal and Qtrax was a quiet one, with Universal confirming in a press conference that, “Qtrax will now have access to the most extensive digital music catalogue of chart-topping artists in the world" but not going into the logistics of the deal in any great detail. It has been confirmed that artists and songwriters will be compensated for the use of their content.
At present, the deal only covers the North America market with no further details if it will branch out further a field.
It is still unknown whether or not the other three major labels will get involved. If they do, it could spell the beginning of the end for paying for music altogether.
