No Justice

In an MTV interview, Justice have come clean to the fact that they sampled over 400 records on their 'Cross' album, and only got clearance for a handful of them.

The artists they sampled included Slipknot, 50 Cent, Queen, Madonna and Divo. The implications of them spilling the beans like this could be they have to pay out royalties on every single sample they've used.

Justice record albums with all the speed of watchmakers. Each track is made up of so many miliseconds of sampled music that the copying alone takes days.

De Rosnay explained how little of the sample they actually use: "Say we use the 'In Da Club' hand clap — not even 50 Cent would notice... if you listen to Genesis there are samples of Slipknot, Queen and 50 Cent, but they are such short samples no one can recognize them. The ones from Slipknot, for example, are just tiny bits of the voice."

The US Copyright Act, which will ultimately decide Justice's fate, has tightened up a lot recently and no matter how small a sample is, it's still deemed the artistic property of the original creator. At least they came clean and didn't try and do a Vanilla Ice on it and pretend they were Bowie.
