Following eighteen years of releasing critically acclaimed albums, Mancunian band Elbow were celebrating last night after winning the very much coveted Mercury Prize for their album “The Seldom Seen Kid”.

The award which offers the winner a £20,000 and almost a guarantee to quadruple their album sales was a hotly tipped race this year with dubstep producer Burial and Radiohead all nominated.

Lead singer Guy Garvey says "It just feels great, very unexpected, you could look at it in the same way as certain Bedouin tribes look at a bowl of milk, something that doesn't occur very often, but tastes all the sweeter for that."

Some past winners in the 16 year old competition include Klaxons, Arctic Monkeys, Dizzee Rascal and Ms Dynamite.
