Bodytonic Podcast 024 : Marcel Dettmann
Marcel Dettmann and Berghain nightclub go together like Jodie Marsh and China Whites but any other comparisons between the two would be stretching things to an unbelievable level. Marcel lives in the Berlin neigbourhood of Friedrichshain, about a ten minute cycle from the club many consider to be the best in the world. Those of you who’ve had to queue outside for an hour and a half only to be turned away while the some soap-dodger in a tracksuit gets in might have a different opinion. But with Tresor apparently off the boil, it seems that the only place for techno to move forward is Berghain. Marcel is an old school East German who was just hitting his teens when techno was in its infancy. Marcel recorded the second Bergain compilation this year. Resident Advisor described it as a “defining moment when techno got out of that locked groove.”. This week he brings us a podcast, and a few answered questions...
The biggest Influence in my Life...
The biggest influence in my life was/is my childhood and that I grew up in DDR.
After the fall of the wall I was strongly influenced by the emerging techno culture in Berlin, it was incredibly exciting to dip into this foreign world.
The Musik Liberty and energy of this time has formed me a lot and the fascination is still a part of my music.
The internet...
The internet is going to be an important platform of communication and presentation for me and my work.
Nevertheless I try to get rid of redundant information in order not to be addicted by these interactive things.
If I could turn back time...
I would do everything the same, I'm totally happy with my personal development.
My first gig....
was in 1993 in my hometown in front of 10 people - I was totally nervous and had stage-fright
The funniest thing I ever heard...
Every day I experience funny & extraordinary stories
There's no explicit & funny story to tell - exciting & new things happen to me a lot - that´s important for me!!
Food and music...
Both means enjoyment & sensuality to me...
Both are essential building blocks - it conciliates my body and soul
The happiest moment...
I want to keep that private
One place you should definitely visit...
Probably I will climb the biggest mountain in the world and enjoy the silence and pureness of the moment.
The best food in the world....
Best food will be found at places where people cook with a lot of love, time and creativity and where people concentrate on essentials aroma's of the region and culture.
The best advice I ever got ....
People who live their lives rationally, do not understand life.
Gee whizz Jay, you're so edgy
Yeah the last time I was in the Berghain it was full of scaldy knackers from Meath in Celtic jerseys. What are you shiting on about you cock?
"This is not to say that I am a nay sayer to the Ostgut ton posse"
LOL
Thanks for the info Jay, I'll make sure never to go there again for the sake of making sure I don't degrade it with my presence as a tourist. Only true officionados like yourself should be allowed in.
You spa.
Jay you idiot you've left yourself open to a vast amount of criticism there. Many of these Irish tourists you mentioned are posters on BT and DMI so you've ostricised yourself completely. Great advertisement for your future gigs.

"I own MANY leather bound books. My apartment smells of rich mahogany."
you get the idea
great mix this really enjoyed!
Jesus after reading that review of the stagnant scene,Irish tourists and all the other deathtraps that I may encounter whilst on my New Years Eve Berlin trip Im seriously considering not going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Ha ha.
Is there REALLY any point in disecting something so much?Just go to a good club and listen to some cool tunes.Check who's playing and if you're a fan, give it a bash.
Id never been to Tresor till last year.So I went over, paid in,listened to Jeff Miils bang it out then went home.It should be that simple.
Anyway this Poddie was great.Nice work Marcel!.
He's going to be dissapointed when he climbs that highest peak only to hear the sound of his tinnitus ;-)
i was in berghain in may just gone and from what i could see we were the only oirish techno tourists in there, and i can tell you now it was far from stagnant, but mr filtypitcher there is obviously the irish spokeperson for the 'sound of berlin', so ill take his word as gospel, sure why woudnt you.
i cant say i loved this podcast, much preferred Shed's , but i loved his set at POGO recently thought it was a breath of fresh air for me in terms of techno and where its at today. obviously though like most irish techno tourists im well behind the times, and dont know my arse from my elbow. mahon your going over there tomorrow , make sure you bring a map and a compass will ya .
Anyone else think the picture of Dettman on the podcast image looks like a really weird mix between Kelly Jones of Stereophonics fame and the Anthony Keidis of The Red Hot Chillis.....................
Didn't you's know, Sandwell District is the new Berghain......
Galligan you ballbag
Well you know, Rob, that's the problem with trying to promote intelligent music in Dublin, people just don't *get* it.
i'm staying out of this. Looking forward to Jay's response though.
Stop baiting Chewy
Great mix fo me too....up there with the Ben Klock one.
Finally got this onto the ipod, sounds great so far!
Music aside, is there any gee in the place?
If you were a club, you'd be Lilly's mate. This is in no way a personal attack. I'm sure you're probably sound out.
Nah. You're shite!
in berlin for new years... whats the best bet for the night??? cheers
This guy is playing Berghain, but I could only imagine how long that q would be at New Year's.
That's some side shade. Who does his hair, Moses?

I think Berghian is now moving towards where the Tresor club was about 5 years ago. More and more I keep hearing that the Berghain buzz is getting a bit stagnant. This maybe for many different reasons. Maybe its because it has become a tourist trap and it is full of Irish techno tourists on Ketamine or maybe its because the very people defining the 'sound of Berlin' don't regularly play there any more, except for the odd time in Berghain/Panorama . There are about 9 residents there so it does take a while to get round them all.....
I have found that the true soul of techno that is the 'sound of Berlin' lies in the smaller clubs dotted around the city. This is not to say that I am a nay sayer to the Ostgut ton posse or their music. In fact I have been harping on about them for years and I am glad they have brought a revolution upon the bland hamster fart techno that mnml has struck upon us, but I am getting the feeling that Berghain is getting a bit boring.
