Meet the artist: Shane McCauley

Related Content

Shane McCauley got into photography in high school after a girl he had a crush on in his homeroom convinced him to join a photography club with her. Chasing his friends around rural Pennsylvania documenting their underground shows eventually evolved into a successful career in music and portrait photography. When not traversing the globe pursuing his other love (travel) Shane can be found in Brooklyn learning Polish from his next door neighbour's kid and eating vegan food.

Has your job ever got you laid, free drink, arrested?

Man, I wish it got me laid or even drinks. I have come close to being arrested a few times. There have been some close calls with law officials. I was almost arrested in Wyoming while photographing a rodeo. They didn’t like that I was from California (at the time). I heard them refer to me as tree hugger a few times.

What did you want to be as a kid?

I really wanted to be an astronaut. I even went to space camp. I also had a phase where i wanted to be a private detective after too many Sherlock Holmes books and too much Magnum PI.

What's the best tool of your trade?

Flexibility

Why did you choose these images?

It’s some of my newest work. I think they represent how I feel about the world right now.

How would you describe them to a blind person?

ergh....

If your art was music what would it sound like?

A friend told me that they remind her of The Beach Boys record "Pet Sounds." I derive a lot of my ideas from music and I think it depends on which images you are talking about. I have always thought my images felt like Joy Division or some other British band from that era.

Slate yourself.

I need lifts in my shoes when I go out with my special gal.

Big up yourself.

I'm a really, REALLY good cook.

How far have you gone for your art?

Once, I ate nothing but wonder bread for a week straight because I was determined to live on my income as an artist. I was living in Philadelphia and there is not much photo work there. I was pretty determined to not get a real job because I wanted to be able to have the time available to shoot. I also did stints as a human guinea pig at a local pharmaceutical company for cash.

You only stick up four photographs and expect me to be satisfied with that?

Shane is a top bloke, great craic. I met him this year at EP when he was touring with Diplo.

Some lad with a great eye for a shot and and even bigger eye for a session.

Pity you dont have a pic of him instead of one he took.

His work is over rated, If I wanted to read about photography I'd check out a photography site.
