Meet the artist: Gaetan Billault

Gaetan Billault first got our attention when he did some posters for Bodytonic club nights. Gaetan is originally from Paris and now he spends his time between that city and Dublin. Gaetan illustrates, designs and creates art on textiles that sometimes comes out as dolls and fantastic animal shapes. They may be morbid and weird sometimes but we think they're just lovely all the same. This is what he's got for you.
Has your job ever got you laid, free drink, arrested? Well until now most people paid me with money.
What did you want to be as a kid? I wanted to be magician and make my sister disappear, we were just two children, she forced me to play with her dolls, this is probably the reason why I also make slutty, creepy dolls. Those creations come from the trauma.
What’s the best tool of your trade? Oh that’s a difficult question just because I use so many different media, but I have to say my computer and most importantly the internet, which keeps me in touch with people when sometime i spend weeks staying at home surprising myself by speaking to the two or three spiders passing by.
Why did you choose these three images? These three pictures are the last ones I made. I wanted to show something other than what people have seen from me already. They can see what I’ve done for you guys (Bodytonic) on my web site. Those illustrations represent perfectly my inspirations and my design (natural and organic). I like my work to have a dream-like, escapist quality. It’s crazy when I think about it because I never ever remember my dreams. I also will have my first small exhibition in Dublin with those pictures so they are pretty important to me.
How would you describe them to a blind person? I think I’d tell him to touch my drawings or dolls, they are made to be alive, being touched is a part of their creative process (Ooh, this sentence could sound a little bit weird).
If your art was music what would it sound like? I d like to say exactly what Steve Ryan said in his interview for this question, that Mum song is just amazing, But let’s say Manitoba with their album Up In Flames, especially the song Crayon.
Slate yourself. I could be a “putain de petit trou du cul“
Big up yourself. I’m someone who make his grandma happy she loves drawing and making things like I do.
How far have you gone for your art? Leaving my life in France, leaving behind baguettes and Camembert for sausages and cheddar in Ireland.
That's not enough. I want more Gaetan.
