Not if you were the last club on earth: Loop, Tokyo

After the closure of the much loved "the Yellow", Loop has become the best house music venue in Tokyo.

Loop is located in the centre of Tokyo but it’s tucked away from the busy binge-drinking party streets, so the place has a more mature and laid back feel. This small basement club has a tiny corridor, a bar and a dance floor. It fills up when there are about 100 people inside and a lot of the time it feels like you’re in someone’s kitchen at an afterparty, and it’s so dark it can be really hard to tell where the dancefloor ends.

Loop is a no frills club: no laser shows, no sofas, no VIP or staff areas. You’ve got a bar, a floor and a DJ box – that’s it. But its status is pretty high. Loop has hosted Basement Jaxx, Blaze, Francois K and Danny Krivit recently.

Talent: Into the music, down to earth heads are the regular here, not many randomers or posh/show-off types. You may find it a slightly closed community but the regulars and staff are very friendly and you can chat them up them easily. As they usually have local lesser-known (but skilled) DJs playing, sometimes the turnout on the floor can be small (30 people on the floor makes it looks busy, though). When they have big international guest DJs , the place becomes unbearably crowded.

Sounds: Amazing. They have an original Urei 1620 and a customized isolator (Joe Clauseel loves it) on the booth, it says a lot. They are fanatical about sound quality, as a result they’ve one of the best sounds for a micro-club in the world. Some of the resident DJs are real old school heads from the original house music scene. A couple of them even used to be regulars at Paradise Garage with Larry Leavan.

Toilets: Just fine. Small and simple but working and clean.

Goodies: Not much. Some people are taking stuff, but it's mainly a regular crowds' hang out, not a hedonistic place. People are more into chatting, dancing and music, rather than getting off their heads to whatever music they hear.

Ice breaker: I have Dope Real isolator at mine.

Jawbreaker: Where is the VIP area?
