Miami Horror – aka 22-year-old Melbourne resident Benjamin - could be the band to soundtrack your neon-clad, sun-fried festival adventures this year. Shortie grabbed a few…
Most people first got to know you through your remixes – but your own material on the ‘Bravado’ EP is more laidback: very 80s-influenced synth-pop stuff. Is this the way you planned it?
“Yes always. For the EP and the upcoming album, the music was always going to be made more for listening in its own right rather than then for the club. I think people may have misinterpreted my sound a little because of all the remixes. At the time, the remixes were mostly meant to be a more danceable version of the original track - so that was my aim: to make them more for the moment but still fresh and part of the Miami Horror sound. If I had made music more along the lines of what I was interested in, people would have a totally different impression of our stuff. Whether that would have been a good thing or a bad thing I’m not sure.”
The video for ‘Don’t Be On With Her’ is fun. The track has been around since 2007 though – why did it take so long to surface?
“That version was just a demo, with no vocals. I always had the idea for the film clip and I am glad to finally get it out as a complete package.”
You stuff you produce for Gameboy/Gamegirl is a lot more party central. What’s the creative process there?
“GBGG started long before I was taking music production ‘seriously’ so I was more inclined to experiment with different genres. They were a bunch of friends who wanted some tracks so we mixed up the idea of their influences and made some crazy experimental party stuff, it was quite satisfying. A lot of it was unidentifiable as one particular genre, which is cool but also totally out of the ordinary for me.”
After touring with GBGG and playing live with Miami Horror, now you are DJing under the Miami Horror banner too…
“Oohee (Miami Horror drummer) and myself have started building a new project as Miami Horror DJs. The set is built from a huge collection of samples, as opposed to tracks. The samples range from many genres and also include a bunch of acapellas that not many other people out there have. We have edited some together and will be mixing the rest live to create more of an improvised set made from a lot of hooks people may and may not know. We even have variations so that we can use a lot of the same stuff to create either clubbier/dancier or more relaxed sets. Some sets we will even bring a small morpho synth box along to help create effects and build-ups. It’s very exciting and we can't wait to put out a mixtape soon.”
