When and why did the label start?
I began deejaying, producing music, and pondering the idea of a label in the mid '90s but the actual date of conception was October 2001. I started the label because I wanted to create music and share it with the world. Also I was very keen on having my own productions on vinyl so I could play them. I guess it was my love of Detroit, vinyl, turntables, and the art of deejaying and music production that was the major reasoning behind the creation of the label.
Who or what was your biggest influence?
That’s easy, Kenny Dixon Jr. and Theo Parrish. In 1994 I was taken to a infamous Hot Box loft party by the even more infamous Detroit promoter Adriel Thornton. The entire night was KDJ and Theo at the turntables accompanied by a percussionist and trumpet player. It blew my mind and changed what deejaying and producing would mean to me forever. The idea for the ‘FPR Girl’ logo came from that night.
Best career move?
What career…
Biggest hit?
Ahh, 'Dump Days'. Please don’t ever ask me to play it again!
Biggest miss?
The b-side to ‘Dump Days’, much better then the a-side in my opinion.
If you could sign one artist, who would it be?
I’ve never signed an artist and don’t think I will. They are all free agents. Marvin Belton, Keith Kemp, PeteBlas, and Juju & Jordash are all totally awesome unsigned dudes, I’m happy with them.
Does vinyl still matter?
Of course vinyl still matters but I am not opposed to my music or anyone else’s getting to people who will enjoy it any way possible. Deejaying, playing live, vinyl, digital, cassette tape… it's just important to get it to people for their enjoyment and maybe to inspire them to chase their own dreams of making music.
What is the secret to success?
This is sort of a vague question but if you mean being happy in life, it's by doing the best that I can with what I’ve got and by being as nice and as considerate of other people as possible.
Top tip?
Alcohol can cause poor judgment. Hennessey and Molson Ice Boiler Makers can cause extremely poor judgment, maybe even comas…
Do you dance?
Like a mothahf@ckah…
What is next?
Getting more FPR releases into Kenny and Theo’s record bags and taking over the world one country at a time - like a true American company.
