Five Singles

Ben Klock 'Klockworks 01' [Klockworks]

The sound, the idea, the innovation, the raw look – it all got me. I had to find out who was behind this release – and thanks to Mr Dixon for helping me with that.

Marcel Dettmann 'Let's Do It' [MDR001]

Pure and raw, house and techno, roots but future!

Martin Buttrich 'Cruise Control' [Planet E]

House, but so techno! The first time I heard it, it sounded like a classic.

Joe Claussell 'Eno' [Sacred Rhythm]

From the dope 'Unchained Rhythm' LP - beautiful house music produced with passion as timeless as the album.

Carl Craig 'Sandstorm' [Planet E]

Pure beauty, stripped down to the essential: Emotion.

so what about vocals cyril are they dead as well?

  • Jacob (Guest User) @ 30 Nov 2009 18:01

Wow, those would not be my picks. I don't even think of them all as house.

  • gmos @ 30 Nov 2009 18:56

Detroit house shone this last decade, moodymann, theo, omar-s, 3 Chairs, Patrice Scott, Keith Worthy, Delano Smith and so many more

well, if you have time, share your picks jacob! be interested to hear others' views also...

Hi Gregd, no i do not think that vocals are dead. I personally find less interresting songs right now, and more interresting Techno jams, but all this as i'm sure you know already goes by cycles.

  • DJDeep @ 1 Dec 2009 22:50

gmos, you are right about the House Sound or Deeper House sound of Detroit considerably expanding in the last decade (well Moodymann's productions started before that), but yes labels like Sistrum, FXHE, and of course Sound Signature etc... I think i could have included the Theo Parrish "Sound Sculptures" albums in my top 5 albums, but it's impossible to pick 5 records of any style anyway!!! So i chose the option of opening up a little bit the music perspective by selectin Jaydee's album as well as the Radio Nova boxset.

as someone who plays vocals and i admit its harder to find the good ones,i still think they can really lift a set played at the right time....

  • Freud (Guest User) @ 2 Dec 2009 11:43

All in all this Dilla album is far from being the best thing he did, really far. I wouldn't call it a "classic".

  • DJDeep @ 2 Dec 2009 14:08

Hi Freud did i call it a "classic", to me it was a significant album in the past 10 years, that is just my opinion, i'm not trying to compete with a Jay Dilla expert...

  • Sleeve Note (Guest User) @ 9 Dec 2009 6:53

i definitely would include Redshape... but granted, 5 picks are not enough!

How can you write a decade review on house and talk about Dettmann, Klock et al, who to my mind are techno in its purest form?
