September began with the See The Light party at the Rex Club – featuring Jeff Mills, Joe Claussell and myself. The idea was to bring the Detroit legend and the New York legend together, and create sort of a dialogue musically with their own sounds and techniques. While working on the concept, Jeff Mills and Joe Claussell were kind enough to fully include me in the process, and it ended up with all three of us playing music together – sets of three to 10 tracks each.
Before we started playing together, I began by playing an eclectic selection of music – jazz, African music, ambient, techno, soul etc… I recorded it, and it is available to listen to at my website.
Joe Claussell played an amazing selection of music – working his EQ magic on Matthew Jonson’s ‘Marionette’ and so many other tracks. He then dropped his new track on Sacred Rhythm, Lower East Side Pipes’ ‘Disorganized Corruption’, a punk group he is currently producing. It’s a very unique record, which could end up being something of a modern classic along the lines of Dinosaur L’s ‘Go Bang’.
Jeff Mills began with an amazing selection of house classics, including Mr Lee’s ‘I Can’t Forget’. He played an incredible set, including many of his own tracks both released and unreleased, including selections from ‘The Good Robot 2’. He then moved into some live improvisation on the Roland TR909 – it was a proper lesson in creativity and funkiness.
One week later, I hosted another party at The Rex, this time with Berghain residents Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann. A night of full-on futuristic techno – Marcel Dettmann played some amazing jams, including his forthcoming release on MDR006 and his remix of ‘Helix’, which is due soon on Diamonds and Pearls. Ben Klock’s set was genius – flawless mixing and featuring a number of unreleased jams. The audience was delighted – and I love the freedom of being able to present one week a very experimental and open-minded party where two legends can express themselves in a certain way, followed by a full-on techno party the following week.
I’m working on some new projects with Jerome Barbe including a two-way portable rotary mixer, the DJR200, and a tube crossover – I’ll keep you posted on that in the near future. I’m playing in Marakesh on September 26, and keep an eye out for the new release of Deeply Rooted House, Blackjoy’s ‘Monilola’, featuring a remix from Argy.
