Lunar Disko was founded in Dublin 2008 by Barry Donovan and Andy Doyle with the ideology to promote the Italo, Electro and Chicago sound. The Lunar Disko crew have just released 2 EPs from Automatic Tasty to celebrate their 10th release on the label. Directors on the board, Barry Donovan & Andy Doyle, have been promising us a Bodytonic Podcast for over a year so we're delighted that they've managed to get it together so quickly compared to their usual steeze. With a hard-rocking tracklisting including releases on Creme, Downlow, Tabernacle, Strangelife & of course blowing their own shiny trumpets with a devastating Automatic Tasty track on Lunar Disko. Keep up to date on all lunarcy business at LunarDisko
Q/A with the man himself
What is your name!
Barry Donovan
When did you start the label ?
First release was in December 2008.
Why ?
It's something myself and Andy had chatted about for a while. We wanted to set up the label to run alongside the club night, and wanted artists who had played at Lunar Disko to release music on the label. Pretty much all the releases so far feature producers that have played at Lunar Disko, apart from Submersible Machines.
Who or what was your biggest influence ?
Dave Clarke was a big influence as a DJ. The World Service mixes got played to death by myself and Andy, in particular the electro one. Then got big into the Dutch scene, Clone/Creme/Viewlexx/CBS etc. which in turn opened my ears to what Chicago and Detroit had to offer. The Electric City club night was also a big influence for me.
What was your biggest record ? And your best ?
Id say the Submersible Machines 12" has been the biggest record to date. I think alot of people missed out on the first pressing, and there was a good few people getting in touch about a re-press. So, we went ahead with another run which is pretty much sold out now.
Can you make a living running a label ?
Not that I know of! :)
If you could sign any artist, who would you go for ? And why ?
There's loads of big artists I'd love to have on the label. Though, I think I'd be just as happy discovering more unknown artists that can hold their own amongst the big boys!
Upcoming plans ?
First 2xLP is on the way. Looking forward to releasing that. Artist and sounds will be revealed in the not too distant future ;)
