We caught up with organiser and Irishwoman, Hilary Kavanagh to get a taster of the behind the scenes ups and downs of running a festival:

What's your name, what's your festival & what's your role in running things?

Hilary Kavanagh, Berlin Festival. Lots of tasks from booking input, promo, on-site entertainment, charities.

When did you first set up the festival and how did it go ? What was your motivation for putting it together in year 1?

No festivals in Berlin and having to travel back to Ireland or internationally to hear good music.

What were your influences in terms of festivals you had visited before?

Airwaves, several English festivals, Electric Picnic and my earlier Irish festivals.

What's been your biggest festival to date? What's been your own personal highlight & why ?

2010 in Tempelhof Airport. Too many to list really but Primal Scream performing Screamadelica last year and Fever Ray in the airport hangar. Battles were also fantastic.

Can you make a living running a festival ? If not, what else do you keep busy with through the year?

No comment :-).

Which acts (Alive or dead) that you've never had play would you like to see headline the festival ?

Jack White, Interpol, Beachhouse, Washed Out, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sonic Youth and lots more.

How do you see the festival industry changing over the next few years?

I think it is really beginning to change at the moment so let's wait and see. German festival scene is quite different to Ireland.

When do you start planning for the festival ? Is there a full-time team involved - how many ? How does this change in the lead-up to the actual event itself?

In October..a few weeks after the festival. A full-time team but not all year round. Staff amount doubles at least.

What's a typical day like for a festival organiser?

Minimum sleep..on automatic pilot making sure everything is set and everyone is having a good time.

What's the best & worst part of running a festival ?

Witnessing everyone enjoying the festival and the results of a year's work versus not having enough time to see the acts we booked.

Which artist is never getting asked back to play again - and more importantly, why?!

Happy to say that we would invite anyone back! Well...all but one.

When did you first set up the festival and how did it go?

2005...no comment but everyone enjoyed including Ian Brown, Animal Collective and of course the audience.
