Label Mates - Kontra Musik
Go behind the scenes with Kontra Musik head man, Ulf Eriksson...
When did you start the label ?
It was just something that had to be done. An obsession and childhood dream.I knew I would not be able to let it go until I had given it a try. Now I have been doing it for 6 years and for some reason I still like it a lot. Even if I several times a year decide to quit. It is not anything I would recommend to my worst enemy.
Who or what was your biggest influence ?
The name is definitely inspired by Underground Resistance. I started the club concept Kontra-Musik already in 2002. At that time I wanted the concept to be sort of an anti thing. I wanted it to be something different from what was going on musically in the city of Malmö, Sweden. Therefore the word Kontra. When it was time to start the label I decided to go with the same name even if the urge to be anti was not so strong anymore. But in some way the word Kontra is still present in the A&R work of the label. It is an important thing for the label to try to release things a bit different from the rest.
What was your biggest record ? And your best ?
Hard question. I really like a lot of them. I am very fond of km003, One - Have A Heart EP. But there are many. The biggest selling record was km013, a 10-inch with Ben Klock and Oni Ayhun remixes.
Can you make a living running a label ?
No. If someone knows how to do this, feel free to contact me. I really can not get into my head how some labels have employees etc.
If you could sign any artist, who would you go for ? And why ?
I really would like to release a Dopplereffekt EP at some point. Why? I think it is about time the group released something new and i think I would be right person to get something fresh out of Mueller. Yes, that would be great for sure.
Upcoming plans ?
Right now the plan is to release more from the artists I already have signed to the label. Expect 12s from Mokira, Jonsson/Alter and Rivet. Also a remix EP from the Jonsson/Alter album is under production. I will do a limited white label with Sweden’s best kept techno secret, Frak. Great stuff. And totally unexpected for the label. Which of course is perfect. Predictability is a deadly sin in music. I got a crazy good demo from an English newcomer. Maybe I release that. A new album from Jonsson/Alter has been discussed. But that is far into the future. Also a new Mokira album would be nice. But he is slow...
