With his 'Infected' EP coming out next Monday, David Shaw and the Beat is giving away a free download of title track remixed by Vicarious Bliss.
Vicarious Bliss (Andy Gardiner), an electro artist signed to Ed Banger Records is known primarily for his 'Theme from Vicarious Bliss' and several remixes. He collaborated with Ladytron on her 'Velocifero' and produced I Love UFO's debut album.
Born and raised in Manchester, David Shaw is today based in France. His cultural duality has had a profound influence on his music, and allowed him to create an original identity somewhere between techno and indie, he, who never wanted to choose between guitars and machines. As producer, writer/composer and performer, he has distinguished himself on the independent scene through various projects such as his own: Siskid (Initial Cuts, Meant Records), Animal Machine (Meant Records) and collaborations: Blackstrobe with Arnaud Rebotini and Ivan Smagghe (Beggars Banquet).
Now he's back with a new single, 'Infected', the first extract of his album to be released on Her Majesty's Ship. This song is a cover of The The, released in 1986. David Shaw gives it a brand new interpretation, but without losing its catchy eighties pop mood. The remixes are delivered by two great acts in electronic music: JD Twitch from Optimo fame and offer a brilliant old school flavoured version. The other from Max Pask, half of Populette, offers a sweaty epic 12 - minute long version, ideal at sunrise after a long night of dancing.
In light of his EP launch we sat down with the man himself and got Straight to the Point
First record bought...
INXS “Kick”, when I was 10, well the cassette really, then my mom bought me the record as a present, as our tape player was on the blinker. I used to spend hours in front of her old Dynatron listening to that record, I even had some "Michael Hutchence dance moves" in front of the mirror, but then I realized I also loved Prince….
Last record I listened to was ...
Well I haven’t bought any new records recently, but the last one I was listening to when I left the house was, Jay Reatard “Blood Visions”! OH I do like Jef Barbara’s “Wild boys”, which was released recently.
The record I pretend I don't love is ...
Bros “When will I be famous?” (there i said it)
The record I always go back to…
Colin Newman’s A-Z but there’s really a holy trinity, which is: Colin newman “A-Z “/ Tones on tail “Pop” / Aphex Twin “Ambient work 85 92”
My biggest musical inspiration is...
Dunno’ if he’s my biggest influence, but for sure Colin Newman, would be (again) top of the list!
My first gigging experience was…
God it was terrible, must have been 15, just being another indie kid somewhere in Blackpool, my cousin Marc was also in the band, we played a cover of “kill your television”, and I had trouble keeping up even though I was rocking my heart out. That’s when I said to myself, I really want to do this again!
My worst gigging experience was…
Not really a gig but a dj set in Hong Kong, on Christmas eve, I had to stop my set, when a big fight started between Triad members (what I was told), they had big shiny knives and I was hiding in the booth scared shitless until the promoter rushed me out the back door.
My best gigging experience was…
Defo when I was a musician for Blackstrobe, I got to play some great venues and festivals with them Pukkelpop festival was incredible…then again Oxegen festival in Japan was magic too!
The person I would least like to share a stage with would be…
Well, a bit easy I know, but Coldplay, for example, is just the epitomy of what makes my skin crawl in the worst possible way of course, just looking at them….(ooh yuk!)
If I wasn’t a musician I would be a…
I use to love drawing so maybe drawing weird comics for a living would've been great!
Favorite YouTube video...
Well it was my mom's favourite now i got them all on DVD, but every now and then I like to watch a quick scene wherever I am.
